What is Mercury Glass?

The name may be deceiving; Mercury glass also known as silvered glass is double-walled blown glass. Between the layers is a silver solution that is put in through the hole left from blowing the glass. The opening is then covered up by either a cork or a small disk. Mercury glass was originally produced around 1840 in Germany. It was used an inexpensive way to make candlesticks, vases, goblets and many other items It gets the name “mercury” from the element that was originally used to back mirrors; not because it contains mercury. This silvered glass has a mirrored look to it. It is often decorated with enamel, paint, etching, and engraving. It is said to be the first type of glass art. Shop Mercury Glass
